I’ll be honest with you, I use AI. As a pharmacist, herbalist, and holistic health educator, I find it invaluable for research, content creation, and connecting complex ideas. But here’s what most of us don’t talk about: every time we use AI, we’re participating in one of the fastest-growing contributors to global carbon emissions.

And just like with crunchy swaps that actually stick, our relationship with AI doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. It can be conscious, intentional, and aligned with our values, part of our broader commitment to practical eco-living for real life.

Let me break down what’s really happening, and what we can actually do about it.

The Uncomfortable Truth About AI’s Carbon Footprint

Data centers are estimated to consume around 415 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity, accounting for about 1.5% of global electricity consumption in 2024, with growth at 12% per year over the last five years. And AI is accelerating this trend dramatically [1].

Here’s what shocked me when I started researching this: AI-specific servers in data centers used between 53 and 76 terawatt-hours of electricity, enough to power more than 7.2 million US homes for a year.

Under the International Energy Agency’s central scenario for data-center growth, the sector’s global electricity consumption would more than double between 2024 and 2030, reaching 945 terawatt-hours by the end of the decade, equivalent to the current electricity demand of Japan.

Every time you ask ChatGPT a question, generate an image with DALL-E, or let AI summarize your Zoom meeting, you’re triggering energy-intensive processes in massive data centers. Goldman Sachs Research forecasts global power demand from data centers will increase 50% by 2027 and by as much as 165% by the end of the decade [2].

This isn’t about shaming anyone (least of all myself). It’s about awareness, because we can’t make conscious choices without understanding the impact.

Why AI Uses So Much Energy

The energy consumption happens in two main phases:

  • Training the Model

 This is where the heavy lifting occurs. Large language models require enormous computational power to process massive datasets. We’re talking thousands of high-powered processors running for weeks or months. Market research firm TechInsights estimates that the three major producers (NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel) shipped 3.85 million GPUs to data centers in 2023, up from about 2.67 million in 2022, with that number expected to have increased by an even greater percentage in 2024 [3].

  • Running Queries (Inference)

 Every time you use AI, whether it’s asking a question, generating text, or creating an image, servers have to process your request. Updated data from Green Grid and the SPEC database for 2023-2024 show the average dual socket server drawing 600-750 W, a significant increase from the 365 W average between 2007-2023. While individual queries use less energy than training, the sheer volume of billions of daily interactions adds up fast.

And here’s the kicker: as AI models get more sophisticated and powerful, their energy demands increase exponentially.

The Nervous System Parallel

As someone who works extensively with nervous system regulation, I can’t help but see the parallel here.

Just like our bodies can get stuck in sympathetic overdrive, constantly “on,” burning through resources, heading toward burnout, our digital ecosystem is in overdrive. We’ve normalized constant AI assistance without pausing to ask: Do I actually need this? Is this serving me? What’s the cost?

When we talk about making sustainable swaps that stick, we’re really talking about intentionality. The same principle applies here. Just like choosing reusable water bottles over plastic or natural cleaning products over conventional chemicals, we can make conscious digital choices too.

Practical Ways to Reduce Your AI Carbon Footprint

Here’s where we get into the spiritual-meets-practical territory I love. You don’t have to quit AI cold turkey (I’m certainly not). But you can make conscious choices that significantly reduce your impact.

  • Turn Off Auto-AI Features in Meeting Apps

This is the low-hanging fruit that most people don’t even realize is happening.

  • Zoom/Google AI Companion:
    Zoom: Go to Admin > Account Management > Account Settings > AI Companion and toggle off features you don’t need. You can disable AI summaries, smart recordings, and automatic meeting insights.

Google meets: Uncheck the “Gemini AI” notetaking prompt for every meeting before recording.

  • Microsoft Teams AI:
    Disable transcription and AI note-taking in meeting settings. Go to Settings > Notifications and turn off “Desktop meeting detection notifications” to prevent automatic AI recording.
  • Third-Party AI Note-Takers (Read.ai, Otter.ai, Fireflies):
    These bots join meetings automatically and record everything. Disconnect calendar integrations in your app settings, or type “opt out” during meetings to remove them and delete recorded data.

Ask yourself: Do I really need AI to summarize this 30-minute conversation? Or can I take my own notes and be fully present?

  • Be Intentional With Your Queries

Instead of using AI for every little question, pause and ask:

  • Can I find this answer with a simple Google search (which uses far less energy)?
  • Do I actually need a 500-word response, or would a brief answer suffice?
  • Is this something I could figure out on my own with a little more time?

Use AI for what it’s genuinely good at:

  • Complex research synthesis
  • Creative brainstorming when you’re stuck
  • Drafting long-form content that would take hours manually
  • Coding assistance for specific technical problems

Skip AI for:

  • Basic factual questions
  • Simple definitions
  • Things you could jot down in a notebook
  • Tasks that help you learn and grow by doing them yourself

This is the digital equivalent of asking: do I need to buy a new eco-friendly product, or can I repurpose what I already have?

  • Choose Smaller, More Efficient Models When Possible

Not all AI tools are created equal in terms of energy consumption. Research shows that using a more efficient model architecture and processor in a greener data center can reduce carbon footprint by 100 to 1,000 times [4]

When you have options, choose:

  • Lighter-weight AI tools over massive models
  • Companies that prioritize renewable energy for their data centers
  • Browser-based AI over cloud-based when available (runs on your device’s processor instead of remote servers)

 

  • Batch Your AI Tasks

Instead of asking AI 20 small questions throughout the day, try batching your queries into focused work sessions. This is more efficient both for your workflow and for energy consumption.

Think of it like meal prepping versus ordering takeout every night. One intentional session beats constant micro-interactions.

  • Support Companies with Climate Commitments

Some tech companies are using AI to make their own data centers more energy efficient, predicting and optimizing energy consumption patterns [5]. When choosing AI tools, research whether the company:

  • Uses renewable energy for data centers
  • Publishes transparency reports on carbon emissions
  • Invests in carbon offset programs
  • Prioritizes efficiency in model design

Vote with your subscription dollars and your usage, just like you would by supporting eco-friendly brands for your home products.

The Deeper Question: Do We Need AI for This?

Here’s where I want to get a little sassy and a lot real with you.

We’ve been sold the idea that AI makes everything “better” and “easier.” And sometimes it genuinely does. But often, we’re outsourcing our own thinking, creativity, and problem-solving to machines, not because it’s actually helpful, but because it’s there.

I think about the parallel to conventional medicine versus holistic healing. Yes, pharmaceuticals have their place (I’m a pharmacist, after all). But we’ve over-medicalized normal human experiences. We’ve lost trust in the body’s innate wisdom.

The same thing is happening with AI. We’re losing trust in our own cognitive capacities. Our ability to sit with not-knowing. To wrestle with a problem until we find the answer ourselves.

Sometimes the most sustainable choice isn’t finding a “greener” way to use AI, it’s choosing not to use it at all. This echoes the fundamental principle in zero waste living: the most sustainable option is often the one we already have (or don’t need at all).

Herbal Wisdom for the Digital Age

In herbalism, we talk about the principle of “like treats like” and “opposites balance.” When our nervous systems are overstimulated, we don’t just add more stimulation, we bring in cooling, grounding, nourishing herbs.

The same applies to our digital lives.

If AI is the ultimate “yang” energy, fast, computational, disconnected from earth, then the balance comes from:

  • Analog practices (journaling by hand, sketching ideas on paper)
  • Nature time (literally touching grass, feeling the elements)
  • Embodied learning (making mistakes, figuring things out slowly)
  • Community wisdom (asking a human expert instead of a chatbot)

These aren’t just “nice-to-haves.” They’re essential for maintaining our humanity, our creativity, and our connection to the living world.

Just as I teach in my practical eco-swaps guide, sustainability isn’t about adding more “green” products, it’s often about subtracting, simplifying, and returning to what works.

A Sacred Invitation to Digital Discernment

You don’t have to quit AI. But you can become more conscious about when, how, and why you use it.

Every choice to pause before clicking “generate” is a micro-act of resistance against the assumption that faster and easier always equals better.

Every decision to turn off an auto-AI feature is a vote for presence and intentionality.

And every moment you choose your own brain over a language model is reclaiming your sovereignty in a world increasingly designed to outsource our thinking.
