We’ve been conditioned to see the world in binary terms: right or wrong, good or bad, natural or synthetic, spiritual or material, selfish or selfless.
This black-and-white thinking is an illusion that keeps us small.
The reality? Everything is interconnected. Everything exists in relationship to everything else. We are reflections of each other, part of a unified whole—whether you call it consciousness, source, nature, or God.
There is no “ultimate” self-actualization because our purpose is constantly evolving based on our level of awareness. There’s no absolute “right” or “wrong,” but there IS “more aligned” or “less aligned” with life force, with love, with the highest good.
Societies claim to operate “for the greater good,” but these systems are flawed because they’re run by humans. Mistakes happen: both intentionally and unconsciously. Things fall through cracks.
We try to establish justice through democratic government, social programs, capitalism, taxes. The ideal of “one for all and all for one” sounds beautiful. But humans can’t operate on hyper-extended degrees of separation.
We need to feel the impact of our actions more immediately. That’s why instant gratification hijacks our dopamine system: we’re wired for immediate feedback, not abstract future consequences.
We need to know our neighbors’ names. We need to see their children as extensions of our families. When we’re connected to those around us, our actions naturally become more intentional because we SEE the ripple effects.
For years, I believed I had to choose: be a “real” pharmacist following evidence-based medicine, OR be a holistic practitioner working with plants and energy.
Science or spirituality. Credentials or intuition. Evidence or experience.
This false choice kept me playing small in both worlds: apologizing to my pharmacy colleagues for my “woo-woo” interests, and feeling imposter syndrome in holistic spaces because of my pharmaceutical background.
The breakthrough came when I realized: it’s AND, not OR.
I can honor pharmacology AND plant medicine. I can respect peer-reviewed research AND ancestral wisdom. I can use my PharmD to help people safely transition off medications AND teach them how to support their bodies with herbs and nutrition.
The integration is where the real power lives.
Some mistake the middle path for passivity—just “going with the flow” or avoiding taking a stand.
But the path of ease and flow is actually the delicate balance between exerting your will AND allowing yourself to enjoy the journey. It’s not flailing helplessly in the wind, nor is it white-knuckling your way through with sheer force.
Finding this balance IS the inner work. And it’s always changing.
Like homeostasis, it’s a dynamic process requiring constant recalibration. You’re always responding to inner and outer circumstances. Most people fail because they take an all-or-nothing approach, follow extreme measures, and then internalize failure when it doesn’t work.
Our brains are wired to protect us and maintain homeostasis. Any disruption is viewed as a threat that the brain will automatically resist. So we bypass negative emotions, stuff them down, pretend everything’s fine.
Until we can’t anymore. Until things “blow up” or we get “burned out” because we’ve exceeded our allostatic load.
Perfection is unattainable—it’s an illusion that keeps you stuck.
Self-actualization is not a destination. It’s a journey that never ends. Think of it as a point extending beyond infinity. We make incremental steps, sometimes exponential leaps, sometimes tiny fractional movements on a flattening slope.
Our job isn’t to “get there.” Our job is to approximate it as best we can—through one-degree turtle moves or 180-degree pivots.
Progress, not perfection.
Which practice calls to you?
