Turn Lead Into Gold: A Call for Higher Purpose

personal transformation alchemy

I see the flaws in healthcare, the coaching industry, and in society at large.

And I still choose to show up every day as a coach, healer, and guide.

Not because I think I can fix everything. Not because I have all the answers. But because I intentionally provide a service that I wish existed for me when I was navigating my dark night of the soul.

Let me tell you what that looked like.

The Lead: Where Transformation Begins

I know what it’s like to have fears run so deep that they’re enmeshed with your very personality. To conserve energy and lay low for so long because you don’t have any extra to spare. To question everything: your calling, your capacity, your right to take up space in the world.

The road to my calling wasn’t easy. And honestly? I still question it every day.

And you know what I realized? That questioning is the very thing that keeps me in integrity.

Those who stop questioning limit the opportunity to get to a deeper level of understanding. The moment we think we’ve arrived, we’ve actually stopped evolving.

I owe it to myself and those I serve to keep evolving, because our circumstances keep demanding ever more grit and ingenuity.

I’ve experienced resentment, frustration, shame, and blame, lamenting the unfairness of it all. And I’ve accepted it as part of the growth process, the inevitable “growing pains” of transformation.

The challenges are what help us get creative and ask us to uplevel again and again.

This is the lead. The base material. The starting point of all alchemical work.

Alchemy: The Ancient Art of Transformation

Alchemy was the foundation of the scientific method and the basis of all Western medicine. Whether alchemists were trying to turn lead into gold or create the new blockbuster drug, the process was the same [1]:

We have a question. We make a hypothesis. We run controlled experiments to test it. And we ultimately look for a repeatable pattern.

But alchemy was never just about literal transmutation of metals. Carl Jung recognized that the alchemical process served as a profound metaphor for psychological transformation—the journey from unconscious, unrefined aspects of self into conscious, integrated wholeness [2].

In Jungian terms, the “lead” represents our shadow self: repressed emotions, unresolved conflicts, unexamined beliefs, limiting patterns, and the parts of ourselves we’ve disowned or denied.

The “gold” represents self-awareness, integration, wisdom, and the embodiment of our highest potential.

The alchemical journey is the process of confronting and integrating these shadow elements into conscious awareness.3

This process is not only normal, it’s natural. It would be unnatural to have it any other way.

For example, endless expansion with no limits or checks can lead to cancer, parasitic relationships, or tyranny. Growth requires both expansion AND contraction. Building AND breaking down. Death AND rebirth.

The Stages of Alchemical Transformation

Ancient alchemists identified four primary stages of transformation, and they mirror exactly what happens in deep personal growth work [3]:

  1. Nigredo (Blackening): The Dark Night

This is the stage of confrontation with the shadow. Everything you’ve been avoiding comes to the surface. Old identities dissolve. You face the parts of yourself you’ve kept hidden.

This is where I found myself during my dark night of the soul: conserving energy, questioning everything, feeling the weight of fears so deep they felt like personality traits.

The Nigredo burns away the base dross. It’s painful. It’s necessary. It’s the crucible where transformation begins.

  1. Albedo (Whitening): The Purification

After the burning comes the washing. This is the stage of gaining clarity, of separating what’s true from what’s conditioned. You begin to see yourself more objectively.

The lead becomes silver. You’re not gold yet, but you’re no longer base metal either.

  1. Citrinitas (Yellowing): The Dawn

This stage is marked by the emergence of enlightenment, spiritual insight, or a higher state of consciousness. The sun rises. Light infuses the work.

You start to see patterns. You understand why you struggled. You recognize your gifts emerging from your wounds.

  1. Rubedo (Reddening): The Integration

This is where the gold finally emerges. Not as a superficial change, but as a deep-seated transformation of self. You’ve integrated the shadow. You’ve embodied the wisdom. You’ve become the alchemist.

The treasure isn’t external: it’s the radiance of your authentic self, shining with resilience, compassion, and hard-won wisdom

Same Goes for Our Own Patterns

So when I say “I get it”—it’s because I’ve been through it. And I expect to be through it over and over as long as I’m on this earth.

The same goes for our limiting beliefs, sabotage patterns, and unconscious behaviors. They require the same alchemical process:

  • Identify the pattern (What’s the question?)
  • Understand the origin (What’s the hypothesis?)
  • Test new responses (Run the experiment)
  • Look for what changes (Find the repeatable pattern)

This is mental fitness work. This is shadow work. This is the Great Work of alchemy applied to modern life.

The transformation is never instant. Patience is key. Just as the alchemist carefully tends to the fire, you must nurture your self-transformation with self-care, perseverance, and determination [4].

Sovereign Leadership: Choosing Your Perspective

I choose to view each human being as a sovereign leader of their life, and I honor their agency.

My goal as a leader and coach is to help them see themselves in this divine perspective (and it has nothing to do with religious affiliation). It’s about recognizing the inherent power within each person to choose their response, to direct their growth, to transmute their lead into gold.

This is what I mean by “higher purpose.”

Not some lofty, unattainable ideal. But the daily choice to engage with the alchemical process of your own life. To see challenges as invitations to evolve. To turn resentment into clarity. To transform fear into wisdom.

Why Herbalism? The Gateway to Healing

My mission is to share my gifts and my convictions. I speak about herbalism because it is a potent gateway to healing—not only for each person, but for the way we take care of the world and each other.

Herbs have opened my eyes and my heart. And sometimes that means feeling so deeply that it hurts.

But an open heart reconnects us to our power, even while there’s a risk of heartbreak.

Plants teach us about cycles. About patience. About working with nature rather than against it. About transformation that happens in its own time, not on our demanding schedule.

When we learn to work with plants, we learn to work with ourselves in the same way: gently, patiently, with respect for natural timing and organic process.

This is alchemical wisdom applied through botanical medicine.

To Those Who Feel Called (But Afraid)

I so appreciate the people in my community who have allowed me to witness them in their vulnerability while believing in their potential and holding them in their power.

I’m inspired by my clients’ hearts. They care deeply about their purpose and their impact. They don’t want to be a burden on anyone, including me.

So I want to address anyone who has ever felt called to work with me or anyone else but was afraid of becoming a burden or failing in some way, which may be compounded by the fear of losing face in someone else’s eyes.

Please know that you matter.

Your intuition is real. Trust that little voice that has always been there to guide you.

And if you would like support in how to hear it a bit clearer or louder, know that there are people who would genuinely love to help.

Maybe it’s someone in your family or friend circle. Maybe it’s a healer, coach, or mentor. Maybe it’s a free exchange of energy, or maybe it’s a paid relationship.

Regardless, if you feel called to start this work and are unsure about who you can turn to or what resources you can tap into, know that you can reach out to me or another person you trust.

I only take on clients if I genuinely believe I can help them bring their own gifts online. If it’s not a fit to work together, I’ll do my best to send helpful resources or give you another referral.

Because this isn’t about me building an empire. It’s about all of us doing the Great Work together.

Building a Better World

I want to build a better world where we stop our autopilot systems that exploit. The earth can’t handle any more productivity for the sake of productivity.

Instead, we can infuse our daily lives with meaningful work. And it starts with each of us getting clear on our purpose.

Not the purpose that looks good on paper. Not the purpose that will impress people or make you money.

The purpose that emerges when you’ve done the alchemical work of turning your lead into gold.

When you’ve faced your shadow. When you’ve integrated your wounds. When you’ve transmuted your pain into wisdom and your fear into power.

That’s when you discover what you’re really here to do.

The Great Work awaits.
