Humans are unique not just in our communication or inventiveness, but in our profound need for community and relationships. We’re born completely helpless, dependent on caregivers for survival—and that pattern of needing support never really ends, nor should it.
This isn’t a weakness. It’s our evolutionary design.
Blue Zone research confirms it: strong relationships are the backbone of longevity and health. We’ve looked to elders, mentors, and guides since civilization began. Our neurochemistry rewards us for connection: serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin all fire when we give and receive support in relationships.
There’s no shame in needing help. And there’s profound medicine in both asking for it and offering it.
Yet modern seekers face a confusing landscape. When you’re struggling, you’re typically pushed down one of two paths:
Path One: The Medical-Industrial Complex Therapy ranging from talk to somatic to pharmaceutical to institutionalization. This path often creates dependency on systems that mask symptoms without true healing. You stay stuck in the “patient” role, always needing the next appointment, the next prescription, the next diagnosis to explain why you’re not okay.
Path Two: The Personal Development Industrial Complex Years of self-study and dubiously credentialed coaches charging tens of thousands for programs promising transformation. Push past your comfort zone! Heal your trauma! Manifest your dreams! When it doesn’t work, you’re sold the next program, and the next, each time believing this will finally be different.
Both paths reinforce the same lie: that you’re fundamentally broken and need to be fixed.
I lived this paradox for years. As a licensed pharmacist with a PharmD, I had all the “credentials” the medical system values. I watched patients get sicker on medications I dispensed. I saw children prescribed cocktails of psychiatric drugs with no investigation into diet, toxic exposure, or trauma.
Then I got sick myself: frequent infections, mysterious inflammatory syndromes, gut dysbiosis, hormonal chaos, that no amount of pharmaceutical (or surgical) intervention touched. The system I’d been trained in had no answers for me beyond “manage symptoms.”
That’s when I turned to plant medicine, holistic nutrition, and ancestral wisdom. Not because I rejected science (I’m still a pharmacist) but because I realized we’d forgotten that healing is about supporting the body’s innate intelligence, not overriding it.
My training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Arbor Vitae School of Traditional Herbalism, and as a Positive Intelligence mental fitness coach gave me tools the pharmacy never taught me. Tools that addressed root causes. Tools that worked with the body, not against it.
But here’s what I really learned: The best credential is lived experience combined with deep study. Not authority from an institution, but authority from embodiment.
Why are so many people seeking these services in the first place?
It’s the disintegration of Earth-honoring ways. It’s political, social, and spiritual extremism polarizing us into camps ready to attack “the other.” It’s the loss of intergenerational wisdom and community care. It’s disconnection from the living world masquerading as “progress.”
We can’t therapy or coach our way out of systemic disease. We need to address the conditions creating the disease.
Yes, there are heart-centered practitioners (I count myself among them). But we also need to ask: what kind of world requires this many people to pay for connection, guidance, and permission to trust themselves?
