During pharmacoeconomics class, I remember being told we could use the word “client,” “patient,” or “customer.” The last one stunned me, but looking back, it tracks.

The modern pharmaceutical system thrives on chronic treatment, not healing.
And language plays a big role in sustaining that model.

Let’s unpack this:
The word “patient” stems from Latin patiens, meaning “to suffer” or “endure.”
That subtle implication of helplessness wires people to believe they’re powerless over their condition.

Its cousin, “patience,” means waiting without complaint, another reinforcement that healing is something done to you, not with you.

This narrative:

  • Strips agency
  • Favors external authority
  • Promotes symptom management over root-cause resolution

But words are powerful. They carry belief systems.
When we refer to someone as a client, participant, or sovereign being, we shift the dynamic to one of collaboration and empowerment.

Let’s reimagine healthcare:

  • Where language uplifts rather than diminishes
  • Where healing is participatory
  • Where professionals and clients walk the path together
