Do you believe you’re here to suffer?
Do you believe it’s possible to heal?
Would you rather see every experience as an opportunity for punishment, or a gift?
Can you forgive yourself for not being able to change the past?
Nothing in life is fair.
When we expect fairness, we feel entitled to a certain treatment.
Unfortunately, without accepting something as true, we cannot move forward, and we remain stuck in perpetual “limbo.”
As painful as it is, the only way out is through. One. breath. at. a. time.
The villains that trespass and cause pain from the point of harm indefinitely into the future – are undeniably sick.
This doesn’t excuse their behavior nor right their wrongs, but it may be helpful to shift our perspectives and distance ourselves from our personal narrative to see the big picture.
The shadow, wounded side of the masculine is the perpetrator. Conversely, that of the feminine is the victim.
So many heart wrenching stories behind much trauma in today’s world are playing out this dynamic, including within our own selves.
When we live in a sick society, we can see examples of this everywhere:
-men violating women
-parents abusing children
-humans disregarding the value of life – human, animal, and plant
-human trafficking
-being disconnected from our own power
-fear of using our voices
-censorship, misdirection, propaganda, narratives that benefit the few vs many
-patriarchy, big business, church + state agendas
-war, extortion, exploitation
and on and on it goes…
AND yet…what if I told you that victimhood is just an identity? You can choose to shed it and try a new perspective, even if you’ve been wronged and boundaries have been crossed.
Now, this doesn’t mean you condone what happened.
Acceptance of the facts, is different from defeat.
While you can’t change what happened, you can choose to stop allowing the past to hurt you in the present moment.
Recognition that you have been wronged is not synonymous with taking on the victim role. Instead, you may identify with being a survivor – which reclaims your power and makes it possible to heal.
And by the way healing is not a destination, nor a cure. It’s a process, it’s a state of mind. It’s a constant commitment and recommitment to recognizing that you are, always have been, and will be whole.
It’s possible to alchemize pain into power.
You can recognize the sicknesses around you, and the violations against you…but still continue to take responsibility for only what you can personally control. You can define and redefine your boundaries, and explore your own power and strength.
And you can shine your light even brighter – by spending time sifting and healing your darkest shadow places. Recognizing the wrongs. Re-integrating the wounded parts. Honoring your needs and desires for safety and acceptance.
A few practical steps for this far-from-easy task:
- Orient yourself in time + space by tapping into your 5 senses: for example name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste. This will help bring you into the present moment and circumstance, rather than in a constant loop of fight/flight/freeze response, replaying negative events and triggering the cocktail of chemicals as if you’re re-living the trauma.
- Get out into nature and sync your breath with the respiration of the greenery around you. Notice how the colors, sounds, textures, scents and sensations shift your inner world. Green has a calming visual effect, and the volatile oils in the air have powerful therapeutic benefits.
- Wherever you are, noticing your breath alone can be one of the most effective and efficient ways to tap into your parasympathetic system and begin to relax. Whether you take up a consistent meditation and breath practice, or you drop into your body throughout the day to simply witness your breath – can have profound shifts in rebalancing and healing your nervous system.
- Employ a cathartic modality of choice – to get the excess adrenaline (fight), anxiety (flight), or unspent momentum (freeze) out of your system. Physically move your body, shake it out, dance, jump, stretch, practice martial arts – whatever you need to do that feels like a deep somatic release. You are not broken. Learn to trust in your body and physicality again.
- Express yourself – whether you write a letter to yourself, or someone else (even if you never send it); confide in loved ones; or directly confront the perpetrator. Whatever step, no matter how small, you feel comfortable taking to express your inner feelings, will be a huge step towards moving through the pain. Which is how you can mend and heal, not only yourself – but your entire ecosystem. And you never know who your sharing can inspire and empower.
I have personally moved through all of the above, and found the combination that works for me – my favorites are dance and a mindset/sensory system called Positive Intelligence.
Remember, this is not an overnight shift in perspective, and every micro shift counts towards building a more resilient and healthy nervous system, as well as a happier life.
I know this is a very heavy topic, and it’s not easy to change your habits nor rewire your whole belief system…but I felt compelled to share what I’ve been learning with you all.
Let me know what your favorite healing practice is and whether this resonated!
P.S. I’m offering a limited amount of complimentary sessions to uncover what’s keeping you stuck and how to move towards self-actualization, authentically and fearlessly. Want in? Here’s more info and how to book!
