Probiotics Without The Plastic

The benefits of probiotics are well established and touted among all the health exerts and gurus alike. The microbiome is such an important aspect to total health and wellbeing, helping to support our digestive, endocrine, and immune function. And having a balanced immune system is key to decreasing inflammation, improving skin health, protecting us from pathogens, as well as warding off allergies, asthma, and even cancer.

Many species and strains were studied, the most important of which belong to the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium groups, among a few others. Diversity in the gut goes a long way, so populating it with probiotics, as well as powering them up with prebiotic-rich foods yields best results (and curbing unnecessary antibiotic use!).

Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt, kefir, miso, and even herring are good probiotic sources. Starchy roots and veggies supply the insoluble fiber and inulin that serve as “food” for the probiotics, ensuring proper multiplication and population.

However, supplementing with a probiotic can be therapeutic in cases where the gut needs a bit more support than the diet can provide. Since I prefer the whole food/herb approach, I found a supplement to meet my needs, AND without a plastic package! I’ve recently discovered Mary Ruth’s Liquid probiotic, which has a proprietary blend of the most studied gut-supporting probiotics in a base of enzyme-enriched substrate and organic grasses.

Super excited to try it out and will report results soon 🙂
