Why: This is THE foundational postpartum drink. Nettle is so rich in iron, calcium, magnesium, and other minerals that drinking it daily can make a dramatic difference in your energy and recovery.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup (about 1 oz by weight) dried nettle leaf (NOT nettle root—make sure it’s the leaf)
- Optional additions: 1/4 cup red raspberry leaf, 1/4 cup oatstraw, 1/4 cup alfalfa
- 1 quart (4 cups) boiling water
Instructions:
- Place dried herbs in a quart mason jar
- Pour boiling water over herbs to fill the jar
- Cover tightly and let steep 4-8 hours (or overnight)
- Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
- Drink throughout the day (can be served warm or room temperature—avoid ice)
Dosage: 2-4 cups daily during the postpartum period
Taste: Mild, earthy, slightly grassy. Not unpleasant. If you find it too strong, dilute with more water or add a bit of honey.
Benefits: By the end of the first week of drinking this daily, most women notice a significant improvement in energy, mood, and milk supply.
Storage: Keeps in the fridge for 2-3 days.
