Weight gain and resistance to weight loss can be complex issues with a variety of root causes, both biological and psychological. In this article, we will explore the factors that contribute to weight gain and resistance to weight loss, including biochemistry, metabolism, thyroid function, sex hormones, toxins, heavy metals, emotional regulation, and self-esteem.

Biochemistry and Metabolism

Biochemistry and metabolism play an important role in weight gain and resistance to weight loss. When we consume more calories than we burn, our body stores the excess calories as fat. However, some people have a slower metabolism, which means they burn fewer calories at rest than others. This can make it harder for them to lose weight, even if they are eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. Additionally, some people may have imbalances in their hormones that affect their metabolism, making it more difficult to lose weight.

Thyroid Function

The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that produces hormones that regulate metabolism. If the thyroid is not functioning properly, it can lead to weight gain or difficulty losing weight. Hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid, can slow down the metabolism, while hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid, can speed it up. Both conditions can make it difficult to maintain a healthy weight.

Sex Hormones

Sex hormones also play a role in weight gain and resistance to weight loss. Women, in particular, may experience weight gain during menopause, as a result of declining levels of estrogen. This can lead to an increase in body fat, particularly around the abdomen. Men may also experience hormonal imbalances that affect their weight, such as low testosterone levels, which can lead to a decrease in muscle mass and an increase in body fat.

Toxins and Heavy Metals

Toxins and heavy metals can also contribute to weight gain and resistance to weight loss. Many toxins, such as pesticides and chemicals in food and household products, can disrupt hormones and metabolism, leading to weight gain. Additionally, heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, can accumulate in the body and interfere with thyroid function, leading to weight gain and difficulty losing weight.

Emotional Regulation and Self-Esteem

Finally, emotional regulation and self-esteem are important factors in weight gain and resistance to weight loss. Emotional eating, or eating in response to stress or negative emotions, can lead to overeating and weight gain. Additionally, people who struggle with low self-esteem may find it difficult to stick to a healthy diet and exercise routine, leading to weight gain and difficulty losing weight.

In conclusion, weight gain and resistance to weight loss can be complex issues with a variety of root causes. Biochemistry, metabolism, thyroid function, sex hormones, toxins, heavy metals, emotional regulation, and self-esteem can all play a role in weight gain and resistance to weight loss.

Moreover, the environment, including socioeconomic, racial and other factors play a role in access to food, education and health and weight loss outcomes. By understanding all these multidimensional factors and addressing them appropriately, individuals can improve their chances of maintaining a healthy weight and achieving their weight loss goals.

P.S. Food for thought: Can you fully accept yourself and desire to change your body at the same time?

I invite you to open yourself to the possibility of radical acceptance of yourself, your current weight, the habits and inner processes that led to your current weight along with the possibility of loving transformation. Do not feel guilty for desire to change! And do not let inauthentic body positivity to rob you of your unique experience inside of your body-temple. Let yourself be real yet accepting with where you are at, how you got here and where you want be.
