How to Start Learning Herbs: A Practical Guide for Aspiring Herbalists

One of the questions I get asked most often by students, colleagues, and curious minds alike is:
“Where do I even begin with herbs?”

It’s a valid question. The world of herbal medicine is rich, ancient, and often overwhelming to newcomers. While I’ve created the Best Herbal References Guide to help sort through trustworthy sources, I realize many of you are seeking a true starting point. Not just where to look but how to start learning and remembering herbs.

So let’s talk about fundamental tools.

Step 1: Start With Flash Cards

Flash cards aren’t just for students. They’re for anyone who learns best visually. I personally recommend:

 

These decks help you connect with the herbs one by one, by name, by action, by energetics. Think of it as your mini materia medica (herbal monograph) in your hands.

Step 2: Observe & Interact
