As September’s golden light begins to shift and the air carries whispers of cooler days ahead, we stand at one of nature’s most profound thresholds: the Fall Equinox (September 22, 2025). This celestial moment, when day and night hold each other in perfect balance, offers us an invitation to profound personal transformation and spiritual renewal.
The Dance of Hemispheres and Sacred Timing
While those of us in the Northern Hemisphere prepare to embrace autumn’s introspective embrace, our Southern Hemisphere friends celebrate spring’s awakening energy. This beautiful planetary dance reminds us that transformation is always occurring somewhere, that endings and beginnings are constantly interweaving in the cosmic tapestry of existence.
The Fall Equinox of 2025 arrives with particular potency, carrying themes of balance, reflection, gratitude, and release as we transition into Libra season. Recent cosmic events—including a powerful solar eclipse in Virgo and the ongoing Neptune retrograde in Aries—have created conditions ripe for karmic resets and emotional clarity. This is a sacred passage that can shape the trajectory of your entire year ahead.
Mabon: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Hearts
The pagan festival of Mabon, named after the Welsh god of youth whose story speaks to themes of abduction and liberation, light and shadow, offers us a framework for understanding this season’s deeper currents. Like the myth of Persephone’s descent into the underworld, Mabon teaches us that transformation often requires a journey through darkness—and that this descent is not punishment but preparation for rebirth.
What you choose to begin, release, or transform during this Autumn Equinox can profoundly influence not just the months ahead, but your journey into 2026. This is your moment to set intentions that align with your deepest truth, to make choices that honor who you are becoming rather than who you have been.
The Sacred Medicine of Polarity
At its heart, the Equinox offers us the sacred medicine of balanced polarities in a world that has long favored one aspect over another—masculine over feminine, light over dark, action over reflection.
The Equinox teaches us that dualities are not opposing forces locked in eternal conflict, but complementary energies that serve and strengthen each other. This understanding represents a radical departure from systems that demand we choose sides, offering instead a path toward wholeness that embraces all aspects of our humanity.
Growing up in cultures that privilege certain qualities while dismissing others, we often learn to reject parts of ourselves that are actually essential to our thriving. The Fall Equinox invites us to reclaim these shadow aspects, to see them not as flaws but as necessary components of our complete selves. This season calls us toward radical inclusivity—first with ourselves, then with our communities, and even those that are seemingly in opposition with us.
Grief as Sacred Teacher
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, autumn carries the energetic signature of grief, and is associated with the Lung organ system, which energetically allows us to process this complex emotion. Rather than seeing this as something to avoid or quickly move through, we’re invited to understand grief as a sacred teacher and necessary companion on our journey toward wholeness.
And in between two potent eclipses, there is plenty of grief energy to dive into (I’ve definitely been feeling it!). The key is to allow yourself to swim freely without being completely swept away by the current.
Grief wants to hold you in her tender embrace, to invite you into the dark waters where your deepest hurts can finally be witnessed and honored. She swims beside you in the abyss, serving as guardian of your sorrow-filled tears, your fist-shaking rage, your hard-to-catch breath. She is not your enemy but your healer, guiding you through the necessary process of breaking open so that you can ultimately become whole.
Don’t bypass your own grief by rushing past it or numbing yourself to its medicine. When we suppress or ignore our heart’s cries, they burrow deep into our cells and tissues, creating strain and muffled agony that manifests as physical and emotional suffering. Each time we allow ourselves to truly grieve, we release what no longer serves us. We repair what has been broken. We tend to our wounds with the compassion they deserve. We remember who we are beneath the pain.
And always, love awaits us on the shores of those dark waters—not as a reward for having suffered, but as our natural state once we’ve cleared away everything that was obscuring it.
Rituals for Transformation
As you navigate this powerful portal, consider incorporating practices that honor both the inner and outer aspects of this seasonal shift:
Connect with the Elements: Spend equal time connecting with earth through grounding practices, water through flowing movement or literal immersion, fire through energizing activities or candlelight rituals, and air through conscious breathwork. Even ten minutes outdoors can trigger the release of feel-good hormones and strengthen both your spirit and immune system.
Harvest Your Gratitude: Take inventory of what has grown and flourished in your life this year. What seeds planted in earlier seasons are now ready for harvest? Express genuine appreciation for the abundance already present, even as you prepare for the leaner months ahead.
Practice Sacred Release: What relationships, habits, beliefs, or patterns are you ready to release? Create ceremonial space for letting go—whether through journaling, burning rituals, or simple conscious acknowledgment of what you’re choosing to leave behind. Allow yourself to release emotions with the primal scream, somatic movement/shaking, or just letting your tears flow openly.
Prioritize Authentic Self-Love: As Libra season’s energy can sometimes pull us toward people-pleasing and relationship projection, consciously turn toward self-inquiry and authentic self-care. Taking time to enjoy your own company and prioritize your personal pleasure creates a healthier foundation for every relationship in life, and prepares you for moving deeper inward as winter approaches.
Setting Your Course
The choices you make during this Autumn Equinox will ripple through the holiday season and into the new year. This is your opportunity to align with cycles of withdrawal and return, to honor both the harvest of what has been and the preparation for what’s to come.
Many people find that this season brings unprecedented clarity to their relationships—perhaps releasing old tensions, setting healthier boundaries, or making choices that feel more aligned with their authentic selves. Others discover new creative projects, spiritual practices, or life directions that will carry them through the winter months with purpose and intention.
Whatever transformations are calling to you, remember that you stand at a sacred threshold. The wisdom of countless ancestors who honored these seasonal shifts flows through you. The same cosmic forces that orchestrate the perfect balance of day and night are available to support your own journey toward wholeness.
As the wheel turns and the season shifts, may you embrace both the light you’ve accumulated and the darkness that calls you deeper into truth. May you find the courage to grieve what needs grieving and celebrate what deserves celebration. And may you step into the months ahead with the clear knowing that you carry within yourself everything needed for your continued becoming.
The Fall Equinox reminds us that balance is not a static state but a dynamic dance, and all of us are invited to remember and master the sacred choreography of transformation.
