postpartum bone broth recipe

Simple Postpartum Bone Broth

Why: Bone broth is rich in minerals (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus), collagen (for tissue repair), and amino acids (for healing). It’s easy to digest, warming, and can be sipped throughout the day.

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 lbs bones from organic, pasture-raised chicken, beef, or lamb (knuckle bones, marrow bones, chicken feet are ideal)
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar (helps extract minerals)
  • 1 onion, roughly chopped
  • 2 carrots, roughly chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, roughly chopped
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced
  • 2-3 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 2-3 bay leaves
  • Water to cover

Instructions:

  1. Place bones in a large pot or slow cooker
  2. Add apple cider vinegar and let sit 30 minutes (this helps extract minerals from the bones)
  3. Add vegetables, ginger, garlic, and spices
  4. Cover with water, leaving 2 inches from the top
  5. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a very gentle simmer
  6. Simmer for 12-24 hours for chicken, 24-48 hours for beef (the longer, the more mineral-rich)
  7. Strain and store in jars in the fridge (up to 5 days) or freeze

To serve:

  • Heat a mug of broth, add a pinch of sea salt and a drizzle of ghee
  • Sip it throughout the day like tea
  • Use it as a base for soups, stews, or cooking grains

Pro tip: Make a huge batch and freeze in quart containers. Have someone heat it up for you as needed.
