Practical, Family-Friendly, and Nervous-System-Approved
Real sustainability starts with what you don’t buy. Here are 10 easy, real-life swaps I use with my family to support health and healing without the overwhelm.
✨ Start With What You Already Have
Before we dive into the list, let’s talk about the most important “crunchy tip” of all:
✋ Stop buying new stuff.
Yes, even the eco-friendly, low-tox, beautifully packaged swaps.
The most sustainable, healing, and nervous-system-aligned thing you can do? Reuse and repurpose what you already have.
That might mean:
- Cutting up old towels for cleaning rags instead of buying paper towels
- Swapping out single-use latex gloves or cotton rounds for reusable cloths
- Using up what’s in your cabinet before replacing it with a cleaner option
I reuse and repurpose everything in my household – clothing, shoes, containers in the kitchen. I even have reusable dishwashing gloves for myself, and insist on my housekeeper reusing gloves when she cleans. When I no longer need something, I bring it to a clothes swap or a community “Buy Nothing” group (on Facebook), or drop it off at a donation center.
I rewear clothing and outfits, and limit my laundry loads and dishwashing loads to when it’s truly necessary. I turn off electronic devices, and running water, and try to use the lowest heat settings.
This may seem common sense to those of us who grew up in 2nd or 3rd world countries, or have been exposed to hardship, where saving scraps wasn’t optional. But this is not about “scarcity” or “lack” mindset. It’s about honoring nature’s bounty by not being wasteful. It’s about doing what generations of our ancestors have always done: taking just enough for ourselves, and giving back to the less fortunate, and to the Earth which provides for us all.
Less consumerism = less clutter, less waste, less pressure.
And a whole lot more ease and intention.
Remember: it’s not about looking crunchy, it’s about living in integrity with your values, at your own pace.
